1. Let's talk about education. What can you tell me about the system of education in Belarus?
I think the level of Belarusian education is high enough and it provides a person with a good knowledge. Today Belarusian educational system includes pre-school education, general secondary school, vocational education, secondary special education, higher education, research education (postgraduate), adult education and staff retraining (lifelong education), special education (for people with disabilities). Pre-school education is not compulsory in Belarus but around 70% of children attend kindergarten before they start school. Most children in Belarus start school at the age of 6. School education in Belarus consists of elementary ( or primary), basic and secondary school. The five-year basic secondary school is compulsory. Upon completion of grade 9 students have to take the examinations to receive the certificate of basic education. Basic school graduates can continue their studies at colleges or professional technical institutions where they can focus on completing their high school education and work toward a professional certificate. At the end of grade 11 (general secondary education) students sit the final exam and receive the certificate of general secondary education. Completion of a high school or professional certificate allows students to apply to continue their education at the university level. Belarus has one of the highest student-to-population ratios in Europe. The higher education system in Belarus is seen as prestigious due to its high quality and affordability. Most courses run for 5 years and students can choose to study full time, at evening classes or by correspondence. All higher education establishments are governed by the Ministry of Education in Belarus. In May 2015 Belarus officially joined the Bologna Process – the European Higher Education Area.
2. Does your school differ from any other school you know?
I think my school is the best one. It offers excellent facilities, high teaching standards and a friendly atmosphere. It is very spacious and light. Everything depends on people who are by. Our teachers, my classmates are people who I like and this fact makes my school different from all the others.
3. Ask me what problems I had when I was a student.
Did you like to study?
What was your favourite lesson and why do you like it?
What was the most difficult lesson for you? Why?
How did you overcome the difficulties?
Did you have any problems with your teachers?......
4. You are talking with a British student. What would you advise him/her to do to prepare for an exam well?
First of all, if you want to do well at your exams you should attend all your classes, work hard at the lessons, make notes, because when you put down the key points, you memorize them better. What is more, you should do your homework properly and regularly. It would be wise to make a revision timetable before the examination. If you organize your time properly, you will feel more confident, and will be more likely to get good grades. Whenever you feel under stress, you should take a break and do something relaxing for a while. And finally the night before you sit the exam, go to bed early. If you follow this advice, you will pass your exams.
5. Today some young people want to study abroad because they believe that the level of education is higher there? Would you do the same?
More and more people think that studying abroad is prestigious and it is better to study in Europe than in Belarus. And I can agree with them. However, I think if you want to live in Belarus, you should study there. The knowledge you can get in our country is more suitable for work in Belarus because laws and paperwork are different in different countries. Moreover, studying abroad is very expensive even if your get it free, most universities demand fluent English. As for me I could study somewhere abroad if I had much money. Why not?
